Test of a universality ansatz for the contact values of the radial distribution functions of hard-sphere mixtures near a hard wall
Recent Monte Carlo simulation results for the contact values of polydisperse
hard-sphere mixtures at a hard planar wall are considered in the light of a
universality assumption made in approximate theoretical approaches. It is found
that the data seem to fulfill the universality ansatz reasonably well, thus
opening up the possibility of inferring properties of complicated systems from

Strong covalent bonding between two graphene layers
We show that two graphene layers stacked directly on top of each other (AA
stacking) form strong chemical bonds when the distance between planes is 0.156
nm. Simultaneously, C-C in-plane bonds are considerably weakened from partial
double-bond (0.141 nm) to single bond (0.154 nm). This polymorphic form of
graphene bilayer is meta-stable w.r.t. the one bound by van der Waals forces at
a larger separation (0.335 nm) with an activation energy of 0.16 eV/cell.
Similarly to the structure found in hexaprismane, C forms four single bonds in
a geometry mixing 90^{0} and 120^{0} angles. Intermediate separations between
layers can be stabilized under external anisotropic stresses showing a rich
electronic structure changing from semimetal at van der Waals distance, to
metal when compressed, to wide gap semiconductor at the meta-stable minimum.Comment: tar gzip latex 4 pages 4 figure
Training telescope operators and support astronomers at Paranal
The operations model of the Paranal Observatory relies on the work of
efficient staff to carry out all the daytime and nighttime tasks. This is
highly dependent on adequate training. The Paranal Science Operations
department (PSO) has a training group that devises a well-defined and
continuously evolving training plan for new staff, in addition to broadening
and reinforcing courses for the whole department. This paper presents the
training activities for and by PSO, including recent astronomical and quality
control training for operators, as well as adaptive optics and interferometry

Active learning methodologies at the university classroom
[EN] This paper identifies a set of active learning methodologies, which have in common the consideration of the emotion as a key element for learning. Active learning methodologies are not only intended to awaken emotions but also taught with emotion (Sempere-Ripoll and Rodriguez-Villalobos, 2019). To this extent, different teaching methodologies are used that complement each other, leading to reinforce and consolidate learning. Far Ultraviolet Spectra of B Stars near the Ecliptic
Spectra of B stars in the wavelength range of 911-1100 A have been obtained
with the EURD spectrograph onboard the Spanish satellite MINISAT-01 with ~5 A
spectral resolution. IUE spectra of the same stars have been used to normalize
Kurucz models to the distance, reddening and spectral type of the corresponding
star. The comparison of 8 main-sequence stars studied in detail (alpha Vir,
epsilon Tau, lambda Tau, tau Tau, alpha Leo, zeta Lib, theta Oph, and sigma
Sgr) shows agreement with Kurucz models, but observed fluxes are 10-40% higher
than the models in most cases. The difference in flux between observations and
models is higher in the wavelength range between Lyman alpha and Lyman beta. We
suggest that Kurucz models underestimate the FUV flux of main-sequence B stars
between these two Lyman lines. Computation of flux distributions of
line-blanketed model atmospheres including non-LTE effects suggests that this
flux underestimate could be due to departures from LTE, although other causes
cannot be ruled out. We found the common assumption of solar metallicity for
young disk stars should be made with care, since small deviations can have a
significant impact on FUV model fluxes. Two peculiar stars (rho Leo and epsilon
Aqr), and two emission line stars (epsilon Cap and pi Aqr) were also studied.
Of these, only epsilon Aqr has a flux in agreement with the models. The rest
have strong variability in the IUE range and/or uncertain reddening, which

Systematic review on human resources for health interventions to improve maternal health outcomes: Evidence from low- and middle-income countries
There is a broad consensus and evidence that shows qualified, accessible, and responsive human resources for health (HRH) can make a major impact on the health of the populations. At the same time, there is widespread recognition that HRH crises particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) impede the achievement of better health outcomes/targets. In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), equitable access to a skilled and motivated health worker within a performing health system is need to be ensured. This review contributes to the vast pool of literature towards the assessment of HRH for maternal health and is focused on interventions delivered by skilled birth attendants (SBAs). Studies were included if (a) any HRH interventions in management system, policy, finance, education, partnership, and leadership were implemented; (b) these were related to SBA; (c) reported outcomes related to maternal health; (d) the studies were conducted in LMICs; and (e) studies were in English. Studies were excluded if traditional birth attendants and/or community health workers were trained. The review identified 25 studies which revealed reasons for poor maternal health outcomes in LMICs despite the efforts and policies implemented throughout these years. This review suggested an urgent and immediate need for formative evidence-based research on effective HRH interventions for improved maternal health outcomes. Other initiatives such as education and empowerment of women, alleviating poverty, establishing gender equality, and provision of infrastructure, equipment, drugs, and supplies are all integral components that are required to achieve SDGs by reducing maternal mortality and improving maternal health
Manifestation of quantum chaos on scattering techniques: application to low-energy and photo-electron diffraction intensities
Intensities of LEED and PED are analyzed from a statistical point of view.
The probability distribution is compared with a Porter-Thomas law,
characteristic of a chaotic quantum system. The agreement obtained is
understood in terms of analogies between simple models and Berry's conjecture
for a typical wavefunction of a chaotic system. The consequences of this
behaviour on surface structural analysis are qualitatively discussed by looking
